What Is BYOK in AI Tools?

BYOK means "Bring Your Own Key." In AI tools, it lets you connect your own model provider API key and run supported models through your own billing account instead of relying only on bundled model access.

BYOK is useful for cost control, provider choice, and team governance. A team may already have approved Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter, or another provider account. BYOK lets that team use its own model access while keeping the coding workflow inside the tool.

Verdent supports BYOK as part of its model configuration workflow. This matters for agentic coding because different tasks may need different cost and capability profiles. BYOK does not automatically make coding cheaper or more private, but it gives teams more control over which models they use, how they pay, and how usage is managed.
