What Happens When AI Coding Credits Run Out?

When AI coding credits run out, the result depends on the product and plan: new work may pause, limited models may remain available, a top-up may restore access, or approved metered usage may continue. Check the exact account rule before a critical release.

For Verdent, the current policy says standard credit-based requests stop at zero. Verdent Desktop subscribers can use Eco Mode with selected lower-cost models under separate limits; Verdent for VS Code remains paused until credits become available. Existing files and prior work remain intact. Users can wait for the next billing-cycle refresh, buy a one-time top-up, or upgrade.

Prepare before the limit:

  • Keep work in small commits or isolated branches.
  • Require a checkpoint with completed changes, test evidence, and unresolved risks.
  • Reserve capacity for verification and repair, not only generation.
  • Set alerts and define who may purchase additional usage.
  • Check what happens to queued, scheduled, or background tasks.

Do not assume an active agent will always finish or save a clean checkpoint after the balance changes. Plan important releases around the confirmed policy and current balance.

Checked August 28, 2026. See What Happens If You Run Out of Credits and Eco Mode. Other tools can behave differently, so use their current billing documentation.
