There is no universal best VS Code AI coding plugin. Choose by workflow: inline completion, repository-wide agent work, or a plan-and-verify process. A fair shortlist should include only current, publisher-verified Marketplace listings.

Three official examples illustrate different agent workflows:

Test candidates on the same small feature. Compare setup time, context accuracy, unnecessary edits, permission prompts, test evidence, reviewer effort, and whether the change is accepted. Verify the publisher, supported VS Code version, authentication path, requested permissions, data terms, and recent release notes before installation.
The best plugin is the one that produces the most accepted, understandable work inside your repository's controls—not the one that generates the most code.
